Preparing Your Business for Winter with Snow and Ice Management

During the summer months, it’s hard to think about snow and ice management, but before you know it, old man, winter will be here, and now is the time to think about people slipping and sliding on your property. Unfortunately, by the time the snow starts falling, it’ll be too late to have a plan, so now is the time to strike. In this guide, we’ll give you some handy tips on preparing your business for ice.

Snow and Ice Management

Snow and Ice Management Tips

Fix Drainage Issues

Now is the time to check for any drainage issues on your property. Are your gutters free of debris? Are they draining in a proper spot away from your walkway? Consider that the more water that drains on your sidewalk, the more ice that will build up when it storms. Now is a great time to spot-check your gutters.

Conduct a Roof Inspection

Now is the time to have your roof inspected. By the time it gets cold, no one is going to want to go onto your roof to look for leaks, and you certainly don’t want to find the leaks the hard way. Checking your rook for any repairs that need to be done will let you feel more confident for the coming winter. Unexpected winter storms can cause a roof to leak, as ice and snow often loosen shingles and/or tiles.

Check Your HVAC System

You want to make sure your HVAC system is working from day one. The weather can change on a dime, and, as Texas found out, it can snow anywhere. So make sure you replace all the filters, inspect and repair any broken parts, identify and fix and ductwork that’s come loose, and drain any clogged lines.

Have Your Landscaping Taken Care Of

Now is the time to look at the tree around your property. Are there loose branches waiting to fall on someone or something? Now is the time to prune your trees and ensure they are safe for the winter. Early winter storms often bring heavy, wet snow, and can easily snap off weak branches hovering over sensitive areas.

Inspect Doors and Windows

Heating a building is expensive so ensure you aren’t heating the outside as well. Check all your windows and doors and make sure they are sealed properly, and that there are no drafts that will cause your heating bill to skyrocket.

Check Your Lighting

You don’t think much about your lighting during the summer because it stays light late, but it gets dark early in the winter, and you’ll want to make sure your property is properly lit. Check all your lighting systems and make sure they work because it will be dark early soon enough.
